Frequency Specific Microcurrent
Frequency Specific Microcurrent is a painless physical therapy modality used to treat many conditions, such as nerve and muscle pain. It utilizes micro amperage current and the resonance effects of specific frequencies on tissues and conditions. Micro amperage is the same current produced by your body’s own cells at values 1000 times less than the current of most other electrotherapies.
How does it work?
The machine, approved as a TENS device, can provide symptomatic relief of pain. The frequencies bring a variety of conditions and tissues back into energetic balance, changing pain and function in a number of clinical conditions. FSM frequencies have been found to resonate with biologic tissue, and based on clinical trials and research, it appears that they align with specific conditions and tissues. By creating a protocol that follows the story of a person’s injury, the pain pattern can be reversed. Once the tissue is changed and stable, it is often able to maintain the new configuration. Used as an adjunct with proper diagnosis, treatment, and nutrition, FSM can produce incredible relief from symptoms.
Is there anyone FSM does not work on?
It has been observed that patients who are dehydrated, athletes with inadequate water intake, and patients over 70 who are chronically dehydrated will get little benefit from FSM treatment. Proper hydration is key in getting results from FSM. Every patient is advised to drink at least one liter of water preceding treatment, and at least two liters in the couple hours following. No technique is 100% effective, and FSM is no exception. Microcurrent frequencies resonate with specific tissues, so the effectiveness depends almost entirely on an accurate intake and diagnosis. Shoulder pain, for example, can come from a variety of sources: muscles, tendons, bursa, discs, nerves, or joints. FSM can treat all of these pain generators effectively, but if you treat the muscles and the pain is from the nerves or bursa, you may change the muscle but not effectively eliminate the pain. This analogy applies to every condition.
Why can’t I feel it?
FSM uses current in microamps, which are millionths of an amp. This unit of current is so small there is not enough current to stimulate the sensory nerves.
Why does the therapist change the frequencies on the machine?
Specific frequencies have been observed to affect only certain tissues, and only in specific ways. When a “correct” frequency is chosen, the tissue will soften, feel warm, and/or become less painful, and these effects seem to be long-lasting. Based on your diagnosis, the practitioner will create a protocol which addresses the involved tissues to maximize benefit for you and your particular diagnosis.
What are the risks?
There is no record of microcurrent causing permanent harm to a patient. There are no known risks as long as the practitioner is aware of the patient’s contraindications and follows the proper precautions.
FSM should not be used to treat cancer. FSM should not be used through the brain or during pregnancy. The likelihood of side effects can be magnified in patients with pressure on the spinal cord, through cord injury or disc bulge, so lower amperage should be used. New injuries are treated differently than chronic injuries; acute symptoms in new injuries can be increased by running chronic injury protocols. Please be sure to tell your doctor/therapist if you have any of these contraindicating factors.
What are the side-effects?
Resonance recruits cellular machinery to increase cellular metabolism, which sometimes produces a detoxification reaction. Side-effects can include nausea, fatigue, a temporary increase in pain, and/or flu-like symptoms. Most side-effects are gone within 24 hours following treatment. Side-effects can be limited by drinking plenty of water, which helps the body flush out waste. Your doctor/therapist may also give you supplements to help your liver detoxification pathways process the by-products from the muscles.
